Anime Review: Tonagura!

Title: Tonagura!

Episodes: 13

Synopsis: Kazuki hasn’t seen her first love in since he moved away 10 years ago, and now it turns out he’s moving back. But Yuuji’s no longer the dashing prince she thought he’d be, but he is in fact a great big pervert. The series follows Kazuki as she tries to set Yuuji back on the straight and narrow, gradually pummelling sense into his perverted mind.

My Opinion: Yuuji really is a damn great pervert, as is the entire series. You could probably try a drinking game, where everyone drinks for a panty shot, and you’d be hammered in no time. But unlike other panty-shot programs, this one has more interesting elements in it which, while they don’t override the ecchi, make everything more enjoyable. The comedy is funny and made me laugh a lot. It’s smoothed out over the entire series, so that while there are certain parts that will make you laugh out loud, there’s no sudden lacking in the comedic value that you’ll find in other comedy-romance anime. In the end it all seems to come down to how one person looks at another. A lot of the time we only see someone’s bad points, sometimes concentrating on them so much that the good points are completely ignored. In the end we should realise our own bad points, and build on them rather than destroy them, because in the end it is part of what make us what we are. The series also delves into the bad sides of other people. One of Kazuki’s best friends often tries corrupting Yuuji for her own personal enjoyment or curiosity, and her sister is a prime example of a well-balanced individual. Her sister is actually probably one of my favourite comedy characters, she’s like many other big sisters in the sense that she’s the perfect motherly figure, who’s beautiful, smart, athletic and caring. But again she has certain sides to her that are devious, cunning, and teasing. She also seems to always know what’s going on, no matter how hard people try to hide things from her. Yuuji’s sister Marie is also an interesting one, calling “divine punishment” down on her older brother through the medium of model air-rifles disguised as soft toys.

Summary: A good comedy-romance with interesting themes, well-written characters, a decent plot and original takes on other clichés.
